A thermostat problem looks like a heating or cooling problem, which is why we get so many “the furnace is dead” calls that end at the wall in the hallway. Most thermostat faults are fixable in ten minutes without tools. Here is the order we check things, what each symptom usually means, and the point at which it stops being a thermostat problem.
Blank screen
- Batteries. Most thermostats take two AAs or a coin cell behind the faceplate. A dead thermostat is a dead system. Replace them even if the low-battery warning never appeared.
- The furnace door. Thermostats without batteries draw their power from the furnace through a low-voltage wire. If the furnace’s blower door is not seated, its safety switch cuts power to everything, including the thermostat. Take the panel off and put it back on firmly.
- The furnace switch and breaker. Same reason. A furnace with no power cannot power the thermostat. Our checklist for a furnace that will not turn on covers where the switch hides.
- The low-voltage fuse. The control board in the furnace has a small automotive-style fuse, usually 3 or 5 amps. A thermostat wire that shorted, often where it runs through the attic or where a staple went through it, blows the fuse and the thermostat goes dark. Replacing the fuse is easy; finding the short is the job.
Screen on, system does not respond
- Mode and setpoint. HEAT, not OFF or COOL, and a setpoint above the room temperature. Obvious, and still the most common cause.
- The schedule. A programmed schedule set by a previous owner or a well-meaning relative can hold the house at 60 all night and override what you just entered. Look for a “hold” option or clear the schedule.
- The five-minute delay. Most thermostats and control boards enforce a compressor delay after a change. Nothing happens for up to five minutes. That is protection, not a fault.
- Loose or wrong wiring. A thermostat that was replaced by a homeowner and wired by color rather than by terminal letter will do strange things: fan only, heat when it should cool, nothing at all. If the problem started after a thermostat swap, that is the first suspect.
- Wi-Fi thermostat without a C-wire. Smart thermostats need a constant power wire. Without one, some models steal power from the system and cause it to short cycle or drop offline. If a smart thermostat has been flaky since installation, ask whether a C-wire or a power adapter was installed.
Wrong temperature
- Location. A thermostat in direct afternoon sun, above a lamp, next to a supply register or on a wall shared with a water heater closet reads wrong and shuts the system off early. We see this constantly in Sacramento homes where west-facing windows light up the hallway wall at 4 p.m.
- A gap behind the thermostat. If the hole for the wire is not sealed, air from inside the wall, hot in summer and cold in winter, flows across the sensor. A dab of caulk or foam behind the base fixes it.
- Calibration. Older mechanical thermostats drift. Most digital ones can be offset a degree or two in settings. If it reads two degrees off a good thermometer placed beside it, adjust the offset rather than the setpoint.
Short cycling from the thermostat
If the system starts and stops every few minutes, the thermostat is one of several possible causes and usually not the first. Replacing the thermostat
If the thermostat itself has failed, a replacement is one of the cheaper HVAC jobs there is. Three things worth knowing before you buy one:
- Heat pumps need a heat pump thermostat. A basic furnace thermostat wired to a heat pump either will not control the reversing valve or will run the strips constantly. The box will say “heat pump compatible” and mention O/B terminals.
- Smart thermostats have rebates here. SMUD lists a rebate tied to its demand-response program, and Roseville Electric has offered one as well. Amounts change; our rebate guide covers where to check. Demand response means the utility can nudge the setpoint a few degrees during peak events; read that part before you sign up.
- Zoned homes need a zone-capable thermostat or a thermostat per zone talking to a zone board. Swapping one of them for a generic smart thermostat is a common way to break a working zone system.
When to call and what it costs
If you have checked batteries, the furnace door, the switch, mode and schedule, and the system still does not respond, the fault is either in the wiring or in the equipment, and that is a technician visit. Frequently asked questions
Why is my thermostat screen blank?
Dead batteries first. If the thermostat has no batteries, it is powered by the furnace, so a blower door that is not seated, a furnace switch turned off, a tripped breaker or a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board will all blank the screen.
Why does my furnace not respond to the thermostat?
Check the mode and setpoint, clear any schedule or hold, and wait out the five-minute compressor delay. If the problem began after a thermostat was replaced, it was probably wired by color rather than terminal letter. Otherwise the fault is in the wiring or the equipment.
Why does my thermostat read the wrong temperature?

Can I use any smart thermostat with a heat pump?
