Why Does My Furnace Keep Turning On and Off? Short Cycling, Explained

A furnace that starts, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, and starts again ten minutes later is short cycling. It is one of the more expensive problems to ignore, not because the fix is expensive but because every extra start wears the igniter, the inducer motor and the blower a little more, and because a furnace that never runs long enough to warm the ducts leaves the house cold while the gas bill climbs. Here is how we sort out why it is happening, in the order that finds the cause fastest.

First, what a normal cycle looks like

A correctly sized gas furnace in a Sacramento-area winter should run for roughly ten to fifteen minutes at a time and cycle three to five times an hour on a cold morning, less once the house is warm. If yours runs for two or three minutes and stops, it is short cycling. If the burners light and shut off within seconds, that is a different fault, usually the flame sensor, and we cover it separately below.

Write down how long it runs and how long it rests before you call. That one detail narrows the diagnosis considerably.

The causes, from most to least common

  1. A clogged filter or restricted airflow
  2. A furnace that is too big for the house
  3. A thermostat in the wrong place
  4. A dirty flame sensor
  5. A blocked flue or a tripping pressure switch
  6. A failing limit switch or control board

1. Restricted airflow

The furnace heats the air, the blower moves it, and if the blower cannot move enough air the heat exchanger overheats. A high-limit switch shuts the burners off to protect it. The blower keeps running until the exchanger cools, then the burners light again. From the living room that looks like a furnace turning on and off every few minutes.

The filter is the usual reason. Pull it and look through it at a light. But airflow can also be restricted by closed supply registers, a return grille blocked by furniture, or a return that was undersized when a bigger furnace was installed. That last one is standard in 1950s and 60s ranch homes around Carmichael, Citrus Heights and Arden-Arcade, where the original return was built for a much smaller unit.

2. An oversized furnace

This is the cause nobody wants to hear, because the fix is not a part. A furnace that is too big for the house heats the space so fast that the thermostat is satisfied in a few minutes, the furnace shuts off, the house cools, and it starts again. It will do this for its whole life.

It is very common in the 1990s and 2000s tract homes in Elk Grove, Natomas, Roseville and Rocklin, where builders installed the same 80,000 or 100,000 BTU furnace across a whole subdivision regardless of the floor plan. Sacramento winters are mild. Most homes here need far less heating capacity than they have. An oversized furnace is not dangerous and does not need to be replaced today, but when it does reach the end of its life, sizing the next one correctly fixes the problem for good. 3. Thermostat placement

If the thermostat sits in direct sun for part of the day, near a supply register, above a lamp, or on a wall shared with a water heater closet, it reads warm before the house is warm and shuts the furnace off early. The fix is moving it, or in some cases simply closing the register that blows on it. Check this before paying anyone for a diagnostic.

4. The flame sensor, for cycles that last seconds

If the burners light, run for three to five seconds, and go out, then try again a minute later, the furnace is not short cycling in the usual sense. The control board is not seeing proof of flame and is cutting the gas as a safety step. The flame sensor is almost always the cause, and cleaning it is a short visit. 5. Flue and pressure switch

Before the burners light, an inducer fan pulls air through the heat exchanger and out the flue, and a pressure switch confirms the draft. If the flue is partly blocked, if the inducer is weak, or if a condensate trap on a high-efficiency furnace has clogged, the switch may hold for a minute and then drop, shutting the furnace down mid-cycle. On the attic furnaces in Natomas and Elk Grove the condensate trap is the first thing we check.

6. Limit switch and control board

A high-limit switch that has tripped hundreds of times from a neglected filter eventually weakens and starts tripping at normal temperatures. A control board with a failing relay can drop the call for heat at random. Both are real repairs, both are quick, and both are the last thing we check because the first five are more common.

The one cause you should not troubleshoot yourself

If the furnace shuts off and you notice a rollout, meaning flame visible outside the burner compartment, a scorched smell, soot around the cabinet, or a carbon monoxide alarm, stop running it and open windows. A rollout switch tripping is a sign of a blocked heat exchanger or flue, and a cracked heat exchanger can behave the same way. We take a carbon monoxide reading on every furnace call. Why it costs more than it looks

Short cycling is easy to live with for a season, which is why so many people do. Three reasons not to:

  • Parts wear per start, not per hour. A hot surface igniter rated for so many cycles reaches that number in half the time. Inducer and blower motors take their hardest load at startup.
  • The gas bill rises. A furnace uses the most fuel in the first minutes of a cycle, before the heat exchanger is fully hot. Ten short cycles burn more gas than three long ones for the same heat.
  • The house is never comfortable. Short runs never warm the far rooms or the ducts. The room with the thermostat is fine. The bedrooms are not.
