The catch nobody mentions: the warranty is not identical
This is where the “same machine, less money” story needs an asterisk, and almost no one points it out.
American Standard covers the compressor and outdoor coil for 10 years, with 5 years on the remaining parts, when registered. Trane covers the compressor for 12 years and parts for 10.
So the hardware is the same, but Trane’s paper is better. On a system you plan to keep 15 years, that gap is worth weighing against the $300 to $1,200 you save. If you are staying long term, the Trane warranty may be worth the premium. If you are in the house 7 to 10 years, American Standard is the smarter buy.
