The honest answer is fifteen years, give or take a lot.
That number is not ours. AHRI and the Department of Energy use fifteen years for a central air conditioner and eighteen for a gas furnace when they model efficiency standards. ASHRAE’s service life data puts air conditioners and heat pumps in a fifteen to twenty-five year band. Consumer Reports, surveying its own members, found most units last at least a decade.
So: ten years is the floor, fifteen is the planning number, twenty-plus happens when everything went right. The interesting question is what puts a given system at one end of that range instead of the other.

Note the heat pump line. A heat pump does the cooling job in summer and the heating job in winter, so it accumulates roughly twice the run hours. Same engineering, more mileage.
When to think about replacing
ENERGY STAR’s guidance is blunt and reasonable: consider replacing an air conditioner or heat pump older than ten years, and a furnace or boiler older than fifteen. They also flag two symptoms worth more than the calendar — rising bills alongside frequent repairs, and rooms that are never the right temperature.
The rule we actually use on a service call:
- Past fifteen years and facing a repair over about a thousand dollars. Put the money toward the replacement.
- Cracked heat exchanger on a furnace. Not a budget discussion. That is carbon monoxide.
- Failed compressor out of warranty. The compressor is most of the value of the outdoor unit.
- Under ten years, common part. Fix it. We will say so, and we would rather.
One more that gets missed: if the system is fine but half the house is uncomfortable, that is usually ductwork or sizing, and a new condenser will not fix it.
What actually shortens the life of a system
Very little of it is the badge on the grille.
Wrong size. The single biggest one. An oversized unit satisfies the thermostat too fast, shuts off, and restarts. Every start is the hardest moment in a compressor’s life. This is a large part of why inverter systems tend to outlive single-stage ones. A system that short-cycles for fifteen years has done thirty years of starts.
Poor installation. Incorrect refrigerant charge runs the compressor hot or floods it with liquid. Both shorten its life quietly, over years, with no obvious symptom until it quits.
No maintenance. A dirty condenser coil raises head pressure, which raises compressor temperature. A clogged filter starves airflow across the evaporator. Neither breaks anything this week. Both take years off.

The Sacramento reality
National lifespan figures assume national run hours. Ours are not national.
Our cooling season runs roughly five months, May through September, and the equipment spends a lot of that time working at high ambient temperature. A condenser sitting in full afternoon sun on the west side of a house is operating in conditions well above the 95 degrees its efficiency is rated at. Attic-mounted air handlers, which is most of Natomas and Pocket, live in a space that can pass 130 degrees in July.
The practical effect is that identical equipment gives fewer calendar years here than in a mild coastal town. That is not a reason for despair, it is a reason the maintenance argument is stronger here than the brand argument. Cleaning a condenser coil in a place where the coil is genuinely stressed does more than it does in San Francisco.
It also shifts the buying advice. Given the choice between a marginally more efficient unit and one whose parts sit on a local shelf, take the local shelf. In August the question is not efficiency, it is how fast the house gets cold again.
Do some brands last longer than others?
Nobody publishes failure rates. Manufacturers have the data and keep it. Any article handing you a confident durability ranking without saying where the numbers came from is guessing.
Two things are usable instead. First, warranty length, because a manufacturer sets it from its own failure data and nobody covers parts for twelve years out of generosity. The gap between the best and worst brand is real but modest. The gap between a well-installed, maintained system and a rushed one is much larger. That is the honest hierarchy.
How to get twenty years out of it
Nothing exotic. Change the filter on a schedule rather than when you remember. Keep two feet clear around the outdoor unit and hose the coil off when it gets fuzzy. Get it looked at once a year, before the season rather than during it, so a weak capacitor is a scheduled fifteen-minute job instead of an emergency on the first hundred-degree Saturday. Fix small things while they are small, because a failing capacitor makes the compressor work harder every single start.
