What Is a Ductless Mini-Split?
A ductless mini-split has an outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor units by a small line set, so there is no bulky ductwork. Each indoor unit heats and cools its own zone, which means you can set different temperatures in different rooms and only condition the space you are using.

What a mini-split install actually involves

The work is: mounting the indoor head, setting the outdoor condenser, running the line set and condensate drain between them, and getting a dedicated electrical circuit to the outdoor unit. The line set route is what drives the price. A head on an exterior wall with the condenser just outside is a clean half-day. A head on an interior wall in a two-story house, where the line set has to travel through a closet or around the structure, is a different job entirely. Two things separate a good install from a bad one. First, the system has to be properly evacuated and vacuumed before charging, because moisture left in the line set kills compressors slowly. Second, the condensate has to drain somewhere sensible, since these units produce water and gravity is the only thing moving it. We see plenty of units dripping onto a wall because nobody thought about the drain.
Where mini-splits solve problems ducted systems cannot

A single-zone system is one outdoor unit serving one indoor head. Simple, efficient, cheapest, and the right answer for a garage conversion or one problem room. A multi-zone system runs several indoor heads off one outdoor unit, with independent control in each room. It costs more and the install is more involved, but it can condition a whole small house or several additions at once. Our honest guidance: if you need two zones, price both configurations. Two separate single-zone systems are sometimes cheaper than one multi-zone, and if one fails you still have the other running. That is not what most companies tell you, but it is often true.
