Sacramento is close to the ideal climate for a heat pump, and most homeowners here still don’t know it. Our winters are mild and short. That single fact is what makes the technology work financially, because a heat pump’s weakness is deep cold, and we barely get any. One unit heats and cools. No gas burner, no flue, no combustion. In the Central Valley that’s not a compromise, it’s usually just the better machine.
The question nobody asks until it’s too late: your electrical panel
Here’s what separates a real quote from a phone estimate. A heat pump runs on electricity, and it needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit with breaker space to match. Plenty of older Sacramento homes, especially in East Sacramento, Land Park and Oak Park, are still on 100-amp service with a full panel. If you’re moving off gas heat entirely, that panel may need an upgrade, and that’s a real line item, not a rounding error. We look in the panel during the estimate and tell you before you commit. Newer construction in Natomas and Pocket-Greenhaven usually has 200-amp service and room to spare, which makes those conversions much simpler.
Rebates: SMUD is the reason this pencils out
Sacramento runs on SMUD for electricity, and SMUD has been actively pushing electrification with heat pump incentives. That’s a meaningful advantage over most of California, where the utility has no particular interest in helping you leave gas. Stack that with the federal tax credit available for qualifying high-efficiency heat pumps and the gap against a gas furnace narrows fast, sometimes disappearing entirely. Programs and amounts change, so we check what’s current at quote time rather than quoting you last year’s number.
Going all-electric, or keeping gas as backup?
You have two honest paths. A straight heat pump handles everything. Simplest system, no gas bill for heating, best rebate eligibility. This is what we install most often in Sacramento. A dual fuel setup keeps your gas furnace as backup and runs the heat pump most of the time, letting the furnace take over on the coldest mornings. It costs more up front and it’s honestly overkill for our climate, but if you already have a good furnace and want a hedge, it’s a legitimate choice. What we won’t do is push you all-electric if your panel makes it painful. Sometimes the sensible move is a high-efficiency gas furnace now and a heat pump at the next replacement.
Sizing matters more here, not less
An oversized heat pump is worse than an oversized furnace. It short-cycles, never runs long enough to dehumidify or balance the house, and wears itself out. Modern variable-speed heat pumps are designed to run long and slow, which is exactly right for a climate that spends months in the mild middle. We do a load calculation on the actual house rather than copying the tonnage off whatever is sitting on the pad now.
Where we put it, and why that matters on a small lot
A heat pump runs more hours than a straight AC because it works in winter too. On the tight lots in Midtown, East Sac and Curtis Park, where the side yard is narrow and your neighbor’s bedroom window is ten feet away, placement is a real design decision and not an afterthought. We look at where the noise lands, where the condensate goes, and whether the unit gets airflow on all sides. Cramming a heat pump into the same spot the old condenser occupied is not automatically correct.
What about your ducts?
Heat pumps deliver air at a lower temperature than a gas furnace does. It’s warm, not hot, which is a different feel and takes some people a week to adjust to. The practical consequence is that leaky or undersized ductwork hurts a heat pump more than it hurt your furnace. If half your house was already uneven, fix the ducts as part of the project or you’ll blame the new equipment for an old problem.
